![]() He's a smart guy, a good writer, and an astute observer of humanity, government, politics, and relationships. If you have the patience, listen to it as an audiobook. I'm not usually a big fan of celebrity memoirs or autobiographies, but this is exceptional. Trevor Noah is a rare person, able to appreciate the good stuff in his life and not obsess over the considerable amount of injustice he has experienced. I don't think I've ever said that about a book. Even when he's serious, there is grace and wit - plus a sweetness and generosity of spirit that's rather uplifting. ![]() You might think with all of this terrible stuff - and some of it is really horrific - that this would be an angry, possibly embittered man. He has a beautiful, melodic voice and a lovely cadence. I listened to the audiobook because Noah reads it himself. I don't know if Noah intended it as a cautionary tale, but it is. One of the other noteworthy things about this book was that I learned great deal about things I thought I already knew. I knew it was bad, but South Africa refined oppression into an art form. His birth was, as the title of his book suggests, a crime. Born under apartheid, his existence was illegal. Name something bad that a kid can experience and it probably happened to him. There is a lot of awful stuff children endure. There are lots of books written by people - including me - who had a hard time growing up. This honest and poignant memoir adapted from the #1 New York Times bestseller Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood will astound and inspire readers as well as offer a fascinating perspective on South Africa’s tumultuous racial history.I don't review a lot of books anymore, but this one got to me. In a country where racism barred blacks from social, educational, and economic opportunity, Trevor surmounted staggering obstacles and created a promising future for himself thanks to his mom’s unwavering love and indomitable will. But he did exist - and from the beginning, the often-misbehaved Trevor used his keen smarts and humor to navigate a harsh life under a racist government. Trevor Noah, host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central, shares his remarkable story of growing up in South Africa with a black South African mother and a white European father at a time when it was against the law for a mixed-race child to exist. We do horrible things to one another because we don’t see the person it affects…. JASON REYNOLDS, New York Times bestselling author ![]() The host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah, shares his personal story and the injustices he faced while growing up half black, half white in South Africa under and after apartheid in this New York Times bestselling young readers' adaptation of his adult memoir.Ī piercing reminder that every mad life - even yours - could end up a masterpiece.
